Radon in Simcoe & Norfolk County
Norfolk County is one of the most rural parts of our service area: Simcoe, Delhi, Waterford and Port Rowan surrounded by farms that once grew most of Canada’s tobacco.

Radon in Norfolk & Haldimand
Sandy Norfolk farm country and Lake Erie ports to the west, Haldimand’s clay plain and Grand River towns to the east.
Norfolk and Haldimand counties share a public health unit and a Lake Erie shoreline but sit on very different ground. Simcoe, Delhi, Port Dover and Port Rowan are on the Norfolk Sand Plain. Caledonia, Hagersville, Cayuga and Dunnville sit on the Haldimand Clay Plain along the Grand River. Many homes in both counties are rural, older and on private wells.
The Norfolk Sand Plain is a vast delta of sand and silt left by glacial lakes, the reason this was tobacco country. Those soils drain fast and let soil gas travel freely. To the east, the Haldimand Clay Plain is dense and slow-draining, but clay shrinks and cracks in dry weather, and gas follows trenches and backfill to foundations.
Farmhouses with fieldstone foundations, lakeside cottages around Turkey Point and Port Dover, and a wave of new subdivisions in Caledonia and Simcoe cover most of the housing here. Each has its own radon entry points. Of all our regions, this one has the biggest gap between rural and in-town homes.

Local factors
Sand and gravel let soil gas move freely and over longer distances. More of the radon formed in the ground can reach the air around your foundation instead of decaying in place.
Dense clay slows soil gas, but it cracks in dry spells. Gas then follows the easiest route: the gravel backfill, weeping tile and utility trenches that lead straight to a basement.
A 2024 national study of over 42,000 homes found rural residents were exposed to about 30% more radon than urban residents, with most of the gap linked to drilled wells. Researchers suspect gas travels up the gap around the well casing.
Fieldstone, rubble and early concrete foundations, earth-floor cellars and open sumps give radon many ways in. Older doesn’t mean safer: these homes still need a test.
Lakeshore cottages converted to year-round homes often sit on crawlspaces, piers or patched slabs. Once winterized and heated, they can start pulling in soil gas they never did as summer places.

Questions
Sandy soil doesn’t make radon, but it lets radon move. Where the ground holds uranium-bearing glacial debris, permeable sand lets more of the gas reach your foundation before it decays. That’s one reason neighbouring homes can test very differently.
Not automatically. Clay slows soil gas, but it cracks when dry, and the gravel around your foundation and under your slab gives gas a direct path in. Clay-plain homes still need a long-term test.
